Why Custom Draperies?

Why custom draperies? By Bree Atkins, Design Consultant at The Blind Broker of Kansas City.

The Problem With DIY Draperies.

If you’ve ever walked through a home furnishings retail store, you’ve probably seen the somewhat limited options of fabrics hanging on a shelf, with a couple different sizes available at a very reasonable cost. Seems like an easy DIY project for draperies but in most cases the drapes end up looking crooked or don’t cover the window completely, hang too far off the floor, or puddle on the floor leaving a sloppy look with more holes in the wall than you intended. Then you spend time online trying to figure out how to make the pleats with the clips you had to purchase separately and they still don’t work like the YouTube video shows.
There seem to be endless options for buying draperies online and the prepackaged options in your local homegoods store seem like the way to go, but we frequently have customers calling us for help after they realized it was harder than they thought.

Why Use Professionals?

With custom draperies there is a professional drapery consultant that brings products to your home, discusses the details of where you want the drapes to hang and proper mounting locations and can help you visualize challenges like a tight corner or uneven trim or trying to get a room as dark as possible.
Custom fabrics are beautiful, they come with multiple liner options like light filtering, thermal and blackout, they are properly hemmed and weighted to have that “professional look” and the quality is far superior to what comes prepackaged from the store.
Many people don’t realize all the little details that go into making draperies look spectacular, it’s not as easy as you think and there are a lot of options to consider, but a professional consultant can help you work through identifying what’s most important and making those choices easier for you so you end up with a beautiful drapery that adds a design feature and function to the space where you want it.
